YOUR WINTER BUILDING MANAGEMENT CHECKLIST FROM FMS

It’s probably not surprising to hear that we get very busy around this time of the year, as commercial sites start to experience weather-related issues, due to heavier rainfall, colder weather and additional strain on your building’s systems.

Through changing conditions, your building requires different support, however, the beauty of having Facilities Management Solutions as your FM partner is that you won’t need to call someone different… With one single point of contact for all your needs, and a vast array of services, you can call FMS all year round, to ensure that your building’s requirements are met.

So, with all that being said, we thought that it might be a good idea to put together a little winter checklist that you can go through and see if any of these potential services or additions to your site might be useful to you and your business.

External Lighting

As the night draws in and the days get shorter, it becomes absolutely vital to ensure that the outside areas on your site are well-lit. While there’s no way to prevent it being so cold outside, you can at the very least ensure that your staff, or any visitors are safe and comfortable when exiting the building at the end of the day.

External lighting also improves the security of your premises, as well as the more obvious health and safety benefits, and while we’re suggesting it as a winter-prep project, it will be a permanent upgrade to the site.

Gritting of car parks and walkways

When the weather gets cold, ice can be incredibly dangerous for those walking or driving around the external areas of your site. By gritting your car parks and outside walkways, you can proactively protect your employees or anyone who is on site, preventing accidents and making your premises safe.

Whether you simply have a single entranceway to your building or sprawling pathways around a large area, we can survey your site and provide a bespoke quote to grit it and drastically reduce the risk of accidents during the coldest period of the year.

Boiler servicing and maintenance

There is very little that will disrupt your business more during the winter months than a boiler breakdown. Having a cold office (and therefore cold staff!) is a sure-fired way to put a dampener on the Christmas Spirit. Depending on the temperature, you may not be able to work on site at all.

That’s why it is absolutely essential to ensure that your boiler is prepared to enter the colder months, by scheduling in your boiler service during Autumn, or at the start of winter.

Thanks to our sister company, Plumbing & Gas Solutions, we can provide reliable boiler servicing and maintenance for your commercial gas boiler and wider heating system. This will provide some expert reassurance that you are compliant and that your boiler is prepared to remain strong throughout the cold weather.

Plumbing system lagging

The PGS Group can also provide proactive support for your plumbing systems, including lagging your exposed pipework. Lagging is the insulation that you put around the pipes to regulate the temperature (both keeping the cold out and keeping the hot in), which increases the energy efficiency of the system.

As well as saving you wasted energy (and therefore wasted money!), this will drastically reduce the likelihood of pipes freezing during the cold winter months. While external pipes which directly face the elements are obviously the most at risk – both for freezing and inefficiency, internal pipes can still suffer from both, if they’re in an unheated plant room. We can provide a free, no-obligation survey to identify room for improvement to make sure your site is operating in an efficient and reliable manner.
